It’s further proof that aircraft can be a valuable part of exploration efforts on other planets. Each successful flight is a testament to the helicopter’s engineering and the efforts of its team back on Earth. The idea is to hover at an altitude of 16 feet and then come back down to the Mars surface. Video footage from NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter’s 13 th flight on Sept. Come back at the beginning of the week to see the public's favorite. This image depicts all of the rovers which have driven on Mars, as well as the Mars helicopter. The names of the five rovers are: Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance. Its an eerie scene: A desolate Martian landscape, completely empty, save for the wreckage of what appears. Check out the latest raw images below, and 'Like' your favorites. Over the years, NASA has sent five robotic vehicles, called rovers, to Mars. Perseverance rover, Ingenuity helicopter, and the search for ancient life on Mars 13:47. NASA is expecting Ingenuity to pull off Flight 54 this week with the aim of spending 25 seconds in the air. Here's the Image of the Week as voted on by the public. The plucky helicopter has weathered glitches, software updates, cold and dust. The Ingenuity team had hoped to get five flights out of the rotorcraft. It also contains many off-the-shelf parts that hadn’t been tested in an extreme environment like Mars. On 18 February 2021, NASAs Mars 2020 rover Perseverance and the Mars helicopter Ingenuity will land in Jezero Crater. NASA wasn’t sure it would fly at all because it had never been tried before. The helicopter’s airborne jaunts may seem routine at this point, but it was originally considered a high-risk, high-reward technology demonstration. Perseverance is essentially a rolling laboratory while the nimble helicopter is capable of imaging broad areas, finding interesting landmarks for investigation and spotting potential obstacles along the rover’s planned path. It has been helping out its rover buddy by scouting the Martian landscape from the air. Ingenuity isn’t just flying for the fun of it.
